Infrared Universe: Minolta Riva Zoom 75w + Lomochrome Purple

Artist
My name is Meike van Loon and I’m a student from Tilburg, Netherlands. Outside of studying, I create imagery from my journeys near and far using film. My photography work is a visual diary of things and people that inspire me in life. You can find more of my pictures on my Instagram.
Gear and Film Stock
To shoot this series, I used a point and shoot camera I found at the local second hand shop: Minolta Riva Zoom 75w. I like trying out these kind of cameras, they’re easy to use and you can usually find them for under 3 euros. The film that was used is Lomochrome Purple from Lomography. I saw some pictures on Instagram of someone using this film stock and fell in love with the color rendering right away! It has such a magical feel to it, as if the pictures were taken in another universe! I’m not sure what ISO was used, since I couldn’t set the ISO manually on this camera, perhaps at box-speed. I would love to learn how to develop film by myself, but for now I take them to the local camera store.
Method and Process
Being new to photography in general, I do feel a strong predilection for shooting analog. It’s a slow process, which gives you time to observe and focus on everything outside of the camera. But in the end, this predilection is probably connected to my continuous feeling of being born in the wrong era. I am thinking of buying a DSLR in the near future, because shooting film will make me go bankrupt someday.
Project Thesis
These pictures were taken in Volda, Norway, while I was visiting some friends who live there. They were showing me around and took me on a hiking trip, something you do A LOT when living in Norway. I tried to capture their surroundings and activities purely to collect memories. But in a way these pictures turned out to reflect the way I feel about Norway: a magical piece of earth.
